Watch this Super Creative Video & Production Services Challenge

Moving Picture Rental provided a “one stop shop” solution for Wrecking Ball’s recent set of Adobe’s commercials.  Wrecking Ball  Studio + Labs is a regular customer who relies on us to help them with various production services situations from simple to complex shots. On the ground experience and production services support David Wells, MPR President, offered his expertise and years of production services experience to find Juan Bofill, a stunt coordinator/rigger to fly their actor.  And with safety as a major concern, this was a critical task. Using a lift and harness system the actor felt safe and secure allowing him to achieve his best performance. Additionally, MPR hand-picked the entire crew — gaffer, grips, makeup, etc. and handled payroll. Essentially, Bob Donlon, Producer/Director and Joey Princz, Exec. Producer/Compositor were able to focus on the complex composite shots being captured with an Alexa Mini and Zeiss super speeds. A Grip & Lighting Package too! We also had a 5-ton grip and lighting package on set. The team used large HMI’s to light the wide green screen elements and small LED panels inside the plane. Big thanks Joey and Bob.  Until next time!       See the spots here! Window Washer: The Flight:   Bookmark it to Stumbleupon, Digg, and more! Hide...

Why Continuous Lights Are Right for Photography

Why Continuous Lights Are Right for Photography

Continuous lights  — Arri M18 , Kinoflo fluorescents, Litegear LiteMat 1×1 LED’s, Litepanel 1×1 Astras Bicolor LED Panel, and the K5600 Joker Bug HMI series — are staples of the motion picture and video industry and they’ve solidly entered into the still photography rental world. Continuous lighting systems are more powerful, smaller and consume less power than previous versions of motion picture tungsten lights. Present day still-photographer-friendly continuous lights also include daylight and tungsten fluorescents that are cool to the touch and create little heat. Moving Picture Rental stocks all of these as well as an extensive line of photo equipment rental at our Miami and Fort Lauderdale locations. Benefits of using continuous lights The first benefit is that you’re able to see exactly how light falls on your subject in real time. The ability to quickly make exposure changes on your camera and move lights while observing what the light is doing is an efficient way to work. When you use continuous light sources, as opposed to working with strobes, you’ll never unintentionally blind your subject as you angle the light to that perfect spot. Nowadays, many continuous lights are dimmable. Dim or increase the light’s output while you’re looking through the camera to reduce or increase the aperture and change your depth of field.  And thanks to the fact that fluorescent and LED technology has come so far in such a short time, power consumption on many continuous light sources is minimal. Starting with the small gear: LiteGear Light Mats.  They are super portable, dimmable, and give you Kelvin temperatures between 3200K and 6000K.  They can be battery powered or plug them into the wall. The entire LiteGear LED light family is super flexible, containing a variety of LED panels and LED strips, as well as small LED squares that can be cut to size for product shots, eye lights, and even under counter lights for architectural photography. LiteGear products are fast, flexible and portable. You can even power the LED strips and small LED squares off 9volt batteries.  These are new to photo equipment rental houses like ours. And now for the continuous light big guns: Need a punchy daylight source? The Arri M18 Lights are revolutionary. Throw a medium chimera directly onto the light or bounce off foam core or bead board and you’ll be able to light a large number of people or products with soft light. The Arri M18 plugs into a 20 AMP household AC plug and outputs just 1 F-stop less than conventional 4K HMIs. Shooting in an older home? We’ll rent you a 1200 watt HMI bulb that draws only 15 AMPs. Cloudy day? Create...

Post Hurricane Survival Guide & Rental Generator Hacks

Post Hurricane Survival Guide & Rental Generator Hacks

Hurricane Irma has come and gone and Moving Picture Rental is still experiencing post-storm effects. Luckily, we have rental generator and hurricane relief supplies! Since 1991 we’ve been through many storms starting with Hurricane Andrew that devastated Miami and Homestead.  We’ve learned and we’re ready to endure a CAT 4 or 5. However, we’ve discovered in the immediate aftermath of a storm, that no power, no gas and poor communication can be even more trying.  In fact, four days prior to Hurricane Irma we prepped our rental generators that we normally rent to the film industry. We had all of ours serviced directly — changed their oil, plugs and air filters. We wanted to be ready! So, here’s our Definitive Post Hurricane Survival Guide with our many survival hacks and products we love from our shared post-storm experience.   Post Hurricane Survival Guide & Rental Generator Hacks Our all-time favorite generators are the Honda’s. We have some that are 10 years old in rent and still going strong! The Honda EU3000 can be lifted by 2 people. It is an ideal size. This generator sips gas on its variable throttle control. You cannot power your home AC but you can power a small window unit AC with this unit.     Want to go smaller? This Honda 2000EU is a real work horse and super light weight. Interested instead in purchasing?  Check out: http://powerequipment.honda.com/generators/Compare/?modelid=EU3000ISAN http://powerequipment.honda.com/generators/models/eu2000i Generator Hack – If your rental generator runs 8 hours a day or more it’s always a good idea to capture power in block batteries such as car batteries and then invert power at night to power your fans, alarm systems, small refrigerators, and charge cell phones. Safety tip – you must keep your rental generator outside. To provide shelter for your generator to keep it out of the rain. A piece of plywood placed above it always works. Read this GREAT guide for power management. You can use a smaller generator than you think to power your home! Hacks for Staying Cool Without AC Interested in staying cool at night when your rental generator is off? Our secret weapon is a DC battery powered fan. We’ve had these for over 10 years. We discovered this Fan-Tastic vent fan while training working dogs semi professionally and used these to cool the dog’s kennel when training outside. Expensive but worth it. Run this all night on (1) 32 amp hour battery. Battery Power Hacks Obtain batteries such as these Power Sonic block batteries. This 32 amp hour is ideal as it is easy to carry. One per fan is advisable and will power a fan for up to 10 hours...

David C. Wells of MPR wraps up the NAB Show 2017 with the latest in VR cameras – Google Jump YiiHalo, OZO, Nokia and more. “In 2016 there were just a few VR cameras and rigs.  In 2017: hundreds.  The Yi Halo camera with their Google Jump partnership and flexing a full stereoscopic array was the clear winner with many VR gurus I chatted with.  Looks like live event capture is going lead the charge to a solid business model.” Plus Mevo by Livestream , SHOTOVER, ZEISS Camera Lenses, Cooke Optics, LITEGEAR, Sony, ARRI, Atomos, SONY HDR Crystal Screens and more.
